The promising careers of dozens of young pacing colts gets underway Thursday evening (July 13) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway as part of Governor’s Plate Week racing.
First race post time is 7 p.m. with the Atlantic Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts taking centre stage with $9,320 "A" divisions in races six, eight and 10.
Artys Wish is the morning line choice in race six for trainer/driver Kenny Arsenault and Saint John, N.B. owners Peter Trecartin and Christopher Davidson. The two-year-old son of Westwardho Hanover was second in his career debut in overnight action and faces six rivals in his stakes debut including Tobins Optimism (Gilles Barrieau) and Buddy Mach (Jason Hughes).
All eyes will be on race eight on the evening program after Tangled Mind made history as the fastest Maritime-bred two-year-old qualifying winner in Island history after an awe inspiring 1:58.1 trip at Red Shores Charlottetown. Barrieau trains and drives the two-year-old son of Pang Shui for New Brunswick owners Alfred Barrieau of Dieppe and Michael Clinton of Saint John. Top entries in the "A" division include another pair of Pang Shui colts in Sock It Away (Marc Campbell) and Wilfrid Joseph (Arsenault).
The final $9,320 Atlantic Sires Stakes "A" division is in race 10 with Weekend Atnannies preparing to fight off seven foes and remain undefeated in his young career. Trained and driven by Mike McGuigan, the son of Western Paradise was a winner in his overnight debut with a 2:00.4 victory with a :28.2 closer and gets rail control in his Thursday race. Glenn Dunn of Summerville, P.E.I. owns the two-year-old. Other top contenders in the event are Mybuddyrose (Arsenault) and Mister Dulce (Rodney Gilles), who was also a winner in his overnight debut.
A trio of $2,500 Atlantic Sires Stakes "B" divisions will line up in races two, four and seven. Race three on the card is The Rocket Chief Harvey and Randy MacEachern Memorial, while race five is the Cam Cameron Memorial Pace, and the Kensington Horsemen’s Club sponsors race 11. The Phillip and Henry Doucette Memorial Pace is scheduled as race nine on the program.
