Abby Best and Onehotvett were victorious in their respective $2,500 eliminations of the Late Closer for Open Fillies and Mares at Summerside Raceway, and both did so with plenty of support from the betting public
.
The veteran Abby Best eked out a nose decision in the opening elimination for Kenny Arsenault, who was doing the driving for owner/trainer Angus MacLean. The 10-year-old Cambest miss laid down fractions of :29.3, 1:00.1 and 1:30 before scooting home in :29.4 en route to barely fending off runner-up Grace And Harv. J K Special tagged along to finish third.
The victory was the mare’s fifth of the season in 11 starts, and it was the 59th of her career. She has managed to stash away $117,038 in lifetime earnings.
Onehotvett, who raced five days ago at Flamboro Downs, rallied to a two-length triumph in the second elimination in a time of 1:59.3 for driver Mike Stevenson. The Wade Sorrie-trained six-year-old daughter of Goliath Bayama enjoyed a ground-saving trip throughout the mile before finding clearance in the stretch and driving off to win by a pair of lengths over Troxel Hanover, with Kaitlyn Rose grabbing the bronze medal.
Sent off as the 8-5 favourite, Onehotvett improved her 2011 record to 6-2-2 from 22 starts while boosting her overall bankroll to $184,699. She is now a 16-time winner in her career.
