Ontario’s two-year-old trotting fillies are heading to Georgian Downs for an early season showdown on Saturday, July 13.
Three division winners from the July 6 Grassroots season opener at Kawartha Downs will square off in the fourth $18,000 division this weekend. While Majestic Jewel, Muscle Girl and Lenny Mac currently share top spot in the standings with Chelseas Chance, at least two of them will lose ground after Saturday’s sixth race.
Majestic Jewel, who races out of the Mark Steacy barn for Katherine Steacy of Lansdowne, David Reid of Glenburnie, David McDonald of Cornwall and Glenn Bechtel of Kingston, will make her bid for a second straight win from post four. The Majestic Son daughter was an easy 2:01.4 winner in the season opener.
Rival Muscle Girl gets post six and comes into the race off a hard fought 2:02.3 score at Kawartha. Owner and breeder Ray Paquette of Port Hope trains the daughter of Muscle Mass and My Witch.
The final member of the group, Lenny Mac, will be hampered by the outside post nine in her second start. The Kadabra daughter clocked a 2:02.1 win in the season opener in spite of making an early break in stride and was also victorious in a pair of qualifiers over the Mohawk Racetrack oval in June. Trainer Bob McIntosh of Windsor shares ownership of the homebred filly with Earl Hill Jr. of Oshweken.
Taking on the division heavyweights will be local filly Pink Striped Hose, who is surrounded by prior winners at post five. The Mutineer daughter, owned by trainer Gino Cicero and Marlene Heath of Horning’s Mills, prepped for her career debut with a qualifier at Georgian Downs on July 6 where she finished third with a 2:05.2 effort.
Races 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 will feature the two-year-old trotting filly Grassroots battles, with Georgian Downs’ first race parading onto the Innisfil oval at 7:25 pm.
