Pink Kangaroo Beats Mohawk Mares

Pink Kangaroo made a successful first-over bid to take the $44,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Friday night at Mohawk Racetrack

On June 27, the Cams Card Shark mare added her name to the track record books with a 1:49.3 score and after a second place finish at the Open level last week, Pink Kangaroo returned to the winner’s circle in tonight’s feature. With Steve Condren in the bike, the Brian Hodgson trainee got away fifth from Post 1 while Blissful Smile (Mike Saftic) left effectively from Post 8 and put up a :25.4 first quarter. At that point, the parked out 8-5 co-favourite, Hana Hanover (Randy Waples), took command of the 10-horse field.

Pink Kangaroo, the other fan favourite, was on the attack by the :56.1 half and applied heavy pressure on the outside through three-quarters in 1:25.2. Hana Hanover tried to battle back on the inside down the lane as Pink Kangaroo pulled ahead, but Pink Kangaroo secured a length and a half lead to win in 1:52.

Hana Hanover was second-best and Knock Three Times (Mark MacDonald) finished third.

Owned by John Bell of Petrolia, Ont., Pink Kangaroo scored her fourth win in 12 starts this year lifting her earnings over the $100,000 mark. The five-year-old mare scored her 21st win and raised her total bankroll to $372,485.
