Sitting last at the quarter, Union Man Hanover ripped off cover to deliver as the favourite in the $1,500 Canada Day Pace on Monday, July 1 at Exhibition Park Raceway.
The 10-year-old Artiscape stallion sat six-and-a-half lengths off the lead while Fall Bliss led to a :30.3 opening quarter. Hp Bushido Dragjet tipped first over from third nearing a 1:01 half and supplied cover to Union Man Hanover into the turn and through the backstretch. Fall Bliss continued to lead past three-quarters in 1:31 but had his lead diminish into the final turn. Hp Bushido Dragjet took control into the stretch but could not hold off the 2-5 favourite as Union Man Hanover swept to a three-quarter lengths victory in 2:01.3. Bugger Max, from third over, took third.
Owned and driven by Dr. Mitchell Downey, Union Man Hanover won his sixth race from eight starts this season and his 45th from 198 overall, earning $433,711. The Ellen Stevenson trainee paid $2.60 to win.
