Sid The Kid pounced from the pocket to capture the $28,000 Preferred 2 Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday, June 9 for his first career Preferred-level win.
James MacDonald floated the gelding out from post two into a pocket seat behind Nasey (Travis Cullen), who led the six-horse field to the quarter in :28. The high-class trotters traveled single-file through a soft second panel to the half in :57.1 and began to string out as Nasey shifted up a gear to three-quarters in 1:24.3.
MacDonald angled Sid The Kid off the pylons at the top of the lane to take aim at Nasey. The pacesetter battled through the eighth pole but was overwhelmed by Sid The Kid, who motored clear and held the chasing Ghostly Casper (Tyler Borth) at bay to prevail by a length in 1:52. The favoured Pemberton closed from the back to take third over Nasey.
Sid The Kid broke a 13-race losing streak — in which he hit the board nine times — with the win. The Ben Baillargeon-trained four-year-old is now two-for-15 on the season. Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines own and bred the son of Alarm Detector-Miss Congeniality, who has now earned $182,750 and won eight times in 47 lifetime appearances. The win price was $13.10.
