Amazing Sevens ($25) and driver Frank Affrunti were upset winners in the featured $5,500 trot at Vernon Downs on Friday, June 9.
The favourite, Zapaca (John MacDonald). went straight to the front and set fractions of :27.4, :56.4 and 1:26.2 while Affrunti made his move with 11-1 shot Amazing Sevens going first-up from fifth around the final turn. As they made the turn for home, Amazing Sevens went all out and took over the lead. Poker Play (Steeven Genois) was flying late, but had to settle for second as Amazing Sevens won by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.4. Zapaca was third.
Amazing Sevens is a nine-year-old gelding by Chapter Seven. He is owned and trained by Margaret Spagnola. The win was his first this season in 14 starts after six runner-up finishes and he now has 15 career victories.
Affrunti and Spagnola combined earlier in the card for another win with My Maserati ($12).
Live harness racing returns to Vernon Downs on Saturday with a 10-race card starting at 6:05 p.m.
