After nearly getting caught too far off the front end one week ago, Union Man Hanover prevailed with different tactics in Saturday's feature event at Exhibition Park Raceway.
With Mike Downey at the controls, Union Man Hanover stepped swiftest of all of the gate from post four in the $1,500 Winners Over Pace and cleared to the top early. After panels of :31.3, 1:02.4 and 1:32.4, Union Man Hanover kicked it into another gear in the final stanza and sprinted home in a sharp :28.3 to trip the timer in 2:01.2. Pocket sitter Bugger Max (Mark Haig) was a length and a half back in second with favoured HP Bushido Dragjet (John Davidson) third after a first-over bid couldn't haul down the pacesetter.
A 10-year-old son of Artiscape - Up Front Rose, Union Man Hanover now boasts 44 lifetime victories with $432,566 in career earnings for owner Dr. Mitch Downey of Saint John, N.B. Ellen Stevenson handles the training.
