A compact field of six faced the starting gate in Thursday’s $7,500 feature for distaffers at Vernon Downs, and Dreas Good Powow used her closing skills to stake claim to the winner’s share of the purse.
Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Dreas Good Powow got away last for trainer/driver John MacDonald while Looney Dune shot to the top and sliced out splits of :27.1, :56.1 and 1:24.1. Dreas Good Powow came first over on the way to the half, and she chipped away in the back-half of the contest before kicking home in :28.1 to win by 1-1/4 lengths over The Filly Princess in 1:52.2. Looney Dune faded to finish third.
The seven-year-old daughter of Squaws Fella-Raitt is 3-for-16 this season for J P Stables of Winchester, Ont. The mare is just shy of $150,000 in career earnings.
Vernon Downs is prepping for a fantastic Friday as the miracle mile will host two Empire Breeders Classic Elimination heats for three-year-old trotting colts. Also featured are three divisions of the New York Sire Stakes for sophomore pacing fillies. The 13-race card starts at 6:45 p.m.
