The stable of trainer Gerard Demers was firing on all cylinders during Sunday evening’s 15-race program at Rideau Carleton Raceway, with no fewer than four horses
from the outfit returning to victory lane.
Demers, who put up career numbers in 2009 thanks to 91 wins and earnings in excess of $600,000, took the opener with Paddington (1:58.3) before completing the four-bagger with Rare Copy (1:58), Art Smile (1:56) and King Covenant (1:59.1).
The productive night at the office gives Demers 42 wins this year, and it helped lift this year’s purse haul to $315,403.
Make You Mine and Match Bayama took home weekly bragging rights in the co-featured Preferred events.
A narrow score was turned in by Make You Mine in this week’s top trot. The seven-year-old son of Self Possessed, in rein to trainer Per Henriksen, held on for the quarter-length score over Star Ruffnready. Perfect Vacation rallied late to pick up third prize.
T W Wilhelmsen Inc of Boca Raton, FL owns the gelding, who won for the 21st time in his career. The $7,000 payday lifted his lifetime earnings to $729,960.
Match Bayama picked up his 37th lifetime win in the $14,000 Preferred Pace for the team of driver John MacDonald and trainer Sebastien Giroux. The eight-year-old Goliath Bayama gelding sat a pocket trip throughout before launching a late attack and drawing clear to win by a one-length margin over Pieraz in 1:54.3. The show dough went to Aint No Hearsay.
Frank Spagnolo of Ottawa, ON shares ownership on the veteran with Quebec partners Les Ecuries Giroux Inc of L’Ange Gardien and Claude Giroux of Gatineau. He has racked up $361,816 in lifetime earnings.
