Greengrass pulled off a series sweep in the $12,000 Mayflower Series Final at Sudbury Downs
on Saturday night.
After winning a pair of divisions in the opening legs, the eight-year-old son of Chill Factor captured the final in 1:57.4 by a head after battling with his stablemate Its Art To Believe for most of the mile.
Greengrass and driver Mike MacNeill got away fourth from Post 1 as Its Art To Believe (Justin Turcotte) settled on top by the :28 quarter pole. From there, MacNeill angled his charge to the outside and Greengrass locked in a duel with the early leader through the middle panels of :58.2 and 1:28.1. Turning for home, Its Art To Believe pulled ahead again, but Greengrass had his sights set on the wire and he dug in for the win. Inntheriggin (Kim Plutta) finished third.
Trained and owned by Mike Lamoureux, Greengrass has won seven times in 16 tries this year earning $23,450. The bay’s 22nd lifetime scored lifted his bankroll to $115,903.
In Saturday's $11,000 Not Listed Preferred Pace, Lombo Skyrider A carved out all the panels and then held off a pocket-sitting Seawind Gambler for the victory.
Trainer Don Gillis, Jr. sent the 11-year-old son of Panorama straight to the front from Post 5 and extended his lead on the field as he bypassed each quarter pole. After carving out intervals of :28.1, :58 and 1:26.2, the veteran gelding began to feel some pressure from Seawind Gambler (Allan Hohner). Down the stretch, Seawind Gambler tried to breakaway, but Lombo Skyrider A found the wire just in time for the win in 1:56 by a quarter-length. Sjs Nitelife (Paul MacLean) finished third.
Lombo Skyrider A has won three out of his last four starts at the Preferred level and a total of four times this year earning over $36,000 for owner John Bianco of Bolton, Ont. The winner of 41 races has banked $616,474 in his career.
