Clinton Raceway’s Canada Day double-header got under way on Sunday, June 30 with seven Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions for the three-year-old pacing fillies.

Making a return to the form which saw her crowned the freshman Grassroots champion, Cams Macharena powered her way to victory in the third division, hitting the wire three-quarter lengths on top in 1:57.2 with Doug McNair in the sulky. Tony O’Sullivan trains Mach Three daughter for Ohio owners/breeders Chris Arold, Kenneth Kohut and Michael Drury.

Early season winner Mattys Big Day delivered her second effortless Grassroots victory in the fourth division, cruising home a three and one-half length winner in 1:56.4. Denis St. Pierre engineered the win for trainer Sam Sergi and Quebec owners Debbie Element and Ecurie JGV Enrg.

Matching the division leader’s clocking was Twilight Seelster in the sixth split. St. Marys, Ont. resident Mike Horner guided the Modern Art daughter to the two length victory for his brother, trainer Mark Horner, also of St. Marys, and owner Brad Wilson of Lambton Shores, Ont. The win was the first of the season for Twilight Seelster, who was the runner-up to Cams Macharena in last year’s Grassroots Championship.

Keep The Dream (by Mach Three) and driver Billy Davis Jr. wrapped up the program with the quickest mile of the day, hitting the wire in 1:56.1 for trainer Travis Umphrey of Guelph, Ont. and his Ontario partners Donald Leschied of South Woodslee, David McCallum of West Lorne and Ken Fitzgerald of Carlisle.

The other divisions were won by: Foolish Mind (by I Am A Fool) and Mike Saftic in 1:57 for trainer Sue Marie Gangell; Senorita Santanna (by Santanna Blue Chip) and Jody Jamieson in 1:58.1 for Carl Jamieson; and Western Empress (by Western Maverick) and Randy Waples in 1:57.3 for Bob McIntosh.

The sophomore pacing fillies make their third Grassroots start on August 5 at Grand River Raceway.

The second half of Clinton Raceway’s Ontario Sires Stakes double-header goes postward Monday, July 1 at 1:30 p.m. with eight Grassroots divisions for the three-year-old trotting colts.
