A pair of Preferred events – one trot, one pace - were featured at Grand River Raceway on Wednesday night, which saw Chinnys Wings demolish his rivals late in the game while Part Shark showed early dominance in winning his respective assignment.
In the $10,500 Preferred 2 Trot, co-favourite Bertorico (Doug McNair) left from the inside post position and carved out early fractions of :28.1 and :57.3 before Chinnys Wings and Doug Bowins fired to the front from fifth. The 5-2 second choice went three-wide around a stalled Connected Yankee (J.R. Plante) and cleared the lead past the 1:27.4 third quarter mark before zipping home to win in 1:57.4 by seven lengths. Kashas Kid (Scott Zeron) came on for second over Bertorico.
The victory was Chinnys Wings' third this season and the five-year-old son of Armbro Ricochet-I Quiver Not, who is trained and owned by Bowins along with Donald Brinkman of East Coulee, AB., has yet to finish off the board in five starts.
Part Shark and Scott Zeron clicked in the matching pacing event later on the card for trainer Wayne Preszcator and the Secret Weapon Stables of Waterloo, ON.
The 2-1 second choice left from Post 3 and raced to the opening quarter in :26.4 before taking a second quarter breather. The four-year-old son of Four Starzzz Shark-Pop Art was at the half in :56, three-quarters in 1:24.4, and stopped the clock in 1:53.1 with Button Up (Mike Horner) following a length and three-quarters behind and Acceptable Risk (Trevor Henry) back in third.
The win was Park Shark’s second in a row and fifth of the year in 19 starts.
