After being overtaken in the stretch and having to settle for second place honours in his first two starts this year, Oakmont persevered to record his first seasonal score on Sunday afternoon in the Winners Over Pace at Truro Raceway
.
Racing for a purse of $1,225 in the featured top class with Bernard McCallum catch-driving, Oakmont established command of the seven-horse field from post six and led the way past fractions of :28, :58, and 1:28 en route to a one length victory in 1:57.2. Favourite Maritimer (Kirk Parris), last week's winner, advanced from the backfield to finish second and San Marco Hanover (Ryan Ellis) was third off a two-hole trip.
Oakmont paid $5.40 to win as the slight second choice. Danny Romo trains the five-year-old son of I Am A Fool for owner Paul Gray of Pugwash, N.S. The well-travelled pacer now boasts 13 victories on his resume and $175,405 in lifetime earnings.
