A pair of pacing events for two-year-olds were contested at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, and familiar pedigree produced a winner in lid lifter
at the Campbellville, Ontario oval.
Alexpanderthegreat, the full brother to O’Brien Award winner Nebupanezzar (1:51.2 - $1,090,930) and O.S.S. graduate The Mohegan Pan (1:49.2 - $643,406), stormed home in :27.2 to win in his first lifetime start for the tried, tested and true tandem of driver Steve Condren and trainer Bob McIntosh.
Condren was in no hurry with his charge in the early going. He put the son of No Pan Intended-Western Wonder into a seven-hole at the quarter pole and then lost a position as the field checked in at the half in :57.2. The colt was seventh and parked at the three-quarter pole in 1:27, and despite being in a race against the clock Alexpanderthegreat stormed home and won in going away fashion in 1:55.4.
Tarquin Seelster (Ponder) set the speed and held on to finish second, while Trek Seelster (Modern Art) finished third behind Alexpanderthegreat, who races for owner/breeder Peter Pan Stables Inc of Pepper Pike, Ohio.
Two races later it was Mach It Big turning in an impressive off-the-pace score of his own in his pari-mutuel debut for the father and son combination of trainer Carl Jamieson and driver Jody Jamieson. The son of Mach Three-Belinda Hanover was positioned in the middle of the pack for the majority of the mile before he was called on for late speed. He excelled in that department when he kicked home in :26.3 to win in 1:56.1.
Lyons Elite (Life Sign) was a half-length back in second after staging a solid rally of his own. Big Jim (Western Ideal) also closed well to finish third.
Mach It Big, who was purchased for $42,000 at last year’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale, is owned by Carl Jamieson of Princeton and Thomas Kyron of Toronto, Ontario.
