One track record was toppled at St. John’s Racing & Entertainment Centre on Sunday afternoon and another was equaled thanks to speedy efforts by
pacers Dontbenervous and P H Tornado.
Dontbenervous swept by all five of his foes en route to chopping more than two seconds off the track record for three-year-old pacing colts. The son of Quick Comeback-Stormy Sakra drew off to win by an eight-length margin in 2:03.2 for trainer/driver Terrence Williams.
The seven-time winner, who is owned by the Back River Stable of Goulds, NL, erased the former mark of 2:06 set on June 13, 2010 by Quickcam.
The final race of the afternoon saw P H Tornado annihilate the competition by a 25-length margin in the Preferred Pace. He laid down fractions of :28.3, :57.4 and 1:27.1 for trainer Gord Fleming, who used a :30.2 final frame with the five-year-old son of Grinfromeartoear-Ocean Splash en route to the 1:57.3 score. The clocking matched his own one-week old track record.
The gelding, who is owned by Clifford Garland of Carbonear, NL, has four wins in as many starts this season. The 22-time winner recently surpassed $100,000 in lifetime earnings.
