The landscape of Monday’s $9,000 Open Pace at Century Downs changed drastically shortly after the start when race favourite Appellate made a miscue.
Favourite players gasped, while trainer/driver Paul Davies was grinning from ear to ear.
He was able to treat Sabine Pass to a ground-saving journey in the featured affair, and the gelding parlayed the sweet trip into a 6-1 upset.
Davies got away third in the six-horse affair while Cool Cowboy moseyed to the lead and hung up fractions of :27.3, :56.2 and 1:23.4. Sabine Pass found clearance in the late going and fired home in :29.2 to win by a half-length margin over Cool Cowboy in 1:53.3. Iwontdothatagain was third.
Audrey Leighland of Maple Ridge, BC owns the 16-time winner who now owns a 2-4-4 record from 16 trips to the track this season. The six-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover-Penny For Nickel pushed his lifetime earnings to $163,541 with the win.
