Freshman fever begins at Mohawk Racetrack on Thursday, June 27 with six $15,000 Grassroots divisions for the two-year-old pacing colts.
Among the young hopefuls looking to earn a little Grassroots glory is a half-brother to former Ontario Sires Stakes stand out Warrawee Needy. Hammered down to trainer Dave Menary for a Canadian Yearling Sale topping $90,000 last fall, Warrawee Phoenix makes his career debut from Post 1 in the second division.
Warrawee Phoenix is one of three colts Menary will harness on Monday. The Cheltenham resident will also send out Bringhome Theblue from Post 7 in the fourth race and King Royalty from Post 5 in Race 9.
Last season’s leading trainer Gregg McNair looks ready to defend his Johnston Cup title with a string of five freshman pacing colts ready to rumble around the Mohawk oval on Thursday. The Guelph resident and his son — driver Doug McNair, also from Guelph — will be aiming for the winner’s circle with Zorro from Post 2 in Race 2, Crafty Master from Post 6 in Race 3, Regal Babe from Post 5 in Race 4, On The Big Swing from Post 4 in Race 6, and Three Of Clubs from Post 6 in Race 8.
Mohawk Racetrack’s first race gets under way at 7:25 p.m. on Thursday, June 27 and the two-year-old pacing colts will make their Ontario Sires Stakes debut in Races 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9.
