San Pail Resurfaces

San Pail, the reigning Horse of the Year in Canada and the U.S., participated in Mohawk’s Friday morning qualifying session.

The eight-year-old gelded son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty, who looks to capture his fourth straight Maple Leaf Trot title on July 21 at the Campbellville track, clocked his own qualifying mile in 1:58.3.

The Rod Hughes trainee finished fifth, beaten sixth lengths, with Randy Waples in the sulky. The dash winner, P L Daley, got under the wire in 1:57.2.

The trotting titan, who is owned by breeder Glenn Van Camp and the Hughes Stable Inc., boasts $3,076,635 in lifetime earnings and 51 victories from 111 career outings.

Also, on the 12-race qualifying card, the Travis Umphrey-trained Monkey On My Wheel won her qualifier, with Waples at the helm.

The four-year-old mare went gate-to-wire to stop the clock in 1:53.2. The O’Brien Award winner paced home in :26.3 to win by one and three-quarter lengths.

Monkey On My Wheel, who is owned by breeder Mac Nichol, Timothy Kane and Umphrey, is being pointed towards the Roses Are Red Stakes at Mohawk. The eliminations are scheduled for Saturday, July 14, with the rich final to be contested one week later on July 21.

Last year’s Breeders Crown champion has a $1,049,934 bankroll, with a record of 10-12-2 in 29 lifetime starts.

Several two-year-old qualifiers also took place Friday. Team Baillargeon sent out a trio of winning freshman trotters.

With Mario Baillargeon in the bike, Murmur Hanover stopped the teletimer in 2:00-flat. The colt won by 12 and three-quarter lengths. The son of Majestic Son, who is owned by Richard Berthiaume, was a $70,000 yearling purchase at the 2011 Harrisburg Sale.

Carmen, a homebred daughter of Majestic Son, who is also owed by Berthiaume, scored by four and a half lengths in 2:01.4.

Also from the Ben Baillargeon barn, Rockin With Dewey, a filly from the first crop of Deweycheatumnhowe, won by one length in 2:01.3. Ben owns a piece of the filly with breeder Diane Ingham.
