After another rain postponement of standardbred racing at Cornerstone Raceway in Yorkton on Friday, they finally hit the track Sunday evening for an eight-race card
.
For the third card in-a-row to start the Saskatchewan race season, driver and trainer Tyler Redwood won two races. He was the only driver to pick up multiple wins this week.
Redwood took Kinset Hanover to the win in the opening race of the night, over Jeffrey Stone and Kneehill Harry in second, and Rick Kosterman with Ignite The Spark in third.
“I got looking at the program and thought what was I going to do,” said Redwood of his six-hole starting position. I rocked out with her and decided to see what would happen. I didn’t want to get her boxed in.”
In the end three horses crossed the line so close the order of finish was decided by a photograph.
“It was three across when we finished. It could have been any of us; I just got it by a nose, but it doesn’t say that on the cheque,” said Redwood with a smile.
Redwood got his second win in the sixth race after apparent winner Out Of Snorts was placed down after an objection was upheld by judges. The decision gave Bubblemint the win for Redwood, with Terry Kaufman and Hurricane Pat moved up to second, and Glenn LeDrew and Dal Rio Indy moved to third.
“I’ll definitely take it any which way,” he said of the win, adding it was not the way he necessarily wanted to take the race.
As for the infraction, Redwood said it was not involving his horse at all.
“I didn’t know what was going on,” he said.
Redwood, who drove Bubblemint two seasons ago, said he had changed the mare’s equipment back to what he had used in 2008 when she was racing well for him.
“She raced huge (Sunday),” he said, adding that was good coming off a couple of poor starts the last two races. “It’s good to see her back to that form where she wanted to race.”
Redwood also had three seconds Sunday with Phil House, Judges Discretion and The Candy Man.
