This morning during the political corruption trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, Maywood and Balmoral Park owner John Johnston testified in regard to an alleged shakedown directed towards the racetracks by
the former governor.
According to a report by Fox News, Johnston testified that he became "agitated and angry" when the governor's friend, lobbyist Alonzo 'Lon' Monk, came looking for a $100,000 'donation' from Johnston in order for Blagojevich to vote on legislation which would be good for the racetracks' business.
Monk is co-operating with authorities in regard to the case. Earlier proceedings in the trial have heard excerpts of conversations -- obtained via FBI wiretaps -- that Monk and Blagojevich had in terms of how the donation was going to be extorted from Johnston.
During this morning's proceedings, Johnston explained that when he was told by Monk that he had to make a contribution to Blagojevich's campaign by the end of 2008, he basically told Monk "go fly a kite."
