Get Wings made his move count in the Saturday, June 20 feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, taking the lead with a big third-quarter brush and powering home to win the Preferred Pace.
The 13-dash program was headlined by the $6,250 event in the 12th race, in which Get Wings delivered as the favourite in 1:53.1 for driver Jason Hughes, trainer Vaughan Doyle and owners Gary Ford of Stratford, P.E.I. and Janet Kinney of Wheatley River, P.E.I.
Twin B Tuffenuff (Gilles Barrieau) led to the quarter :28 and half in :57 before Get Wings advanced from fifth and rushed past him at three-quarters in 1:25.2. Get Wings cleared that rival going into the final turn, led into the lane, and was under wraps as he came home a one-length winner. Twin B Tuffenuff was second while Fast Louie (Ken Murphy) finished third.
Get Wings, a four-year-old Bettors Wish-The Captains Angel stallion, is two-for-three with a pair of Preferred wins since moving to Prince Edward Island from Ontario after his May 16 start. His record is six-for-20 this year. He has won 13 of 43 career starts and has earned $175,640. The win price was $3.10.
Kyle Marchbank earned his first trip to the winner's circle as a trainer as Mr William ($17.90) won the third race. Paul Langille kept the six-year-old Artspeak-Wilma Hall gelding in the three-hole through :28.3, :58 and 1:27.2 fractions, then angled him out turning for home and rallied him to a 1-3/4-length victory in 1:57.1. The gelding took his first win of the season in four starts for owners Susanne MacKeigan of Albert Bridge, N.S. and Mike James of Summerside, P.E.I.
Marchbank made 32 previous starts as a trainer and finished second six times before earning his first tally. The Tyne Valley, P.E.I.-based conditioner debuted in 2021 campaigning Windemere Arts, who had been his sole starter until this year. He is now 7-1-1-0 in 2026 following a place finish by Love Party on June 16.
Langille and Adam Merner had the hot hands on the evening with four wins each.
Langille kicked off the card, giving a maiden mark of 2:01.4 to Zendayaskrackrjack ($13.50), who won by 1-1/4 lengths for trainer Tom Weatherbie. Following the win with Mr William, Langille scored by 1-3/4 lengths with Big Pond Cash ($4.60) in Race 4 in 1:56.3 for trainer Earl Watts. Gigis Dream ($2.10) was a front-end winner in the the 13th-race finale with Langille in the bike to double Watts with a three-length victory in 1:54.3.
Merner started his grand slam with Oceanview Lou ($6.30) in Race 2, winning by 4-1/2 lengths in 1:55.4 and completing the Weatherbie double. He then scored by two lengths in the seventh race with Rocks Shining Star ($8.10) in 1:54.2 for trainer David O’Brien. Freight Air ($4.70) then delivered in the eighth race with a 1:55.4 score by 6-1/4 lengths for Merner and trainer Neil Bambrick. Trainer O’Brien supplied Merner his fourth winner in the ninth race as Trumpster Blues ($2.10) was much the best, scoring by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:53.
Live racing continues Tuesday evening at Red Shores Summerside featuring the Atlantic Regional Driving Championship. First post is set for 6 p.m., with the contest starting in the third race.
