A pair of the first events for two-year-olds at Woodbine Mohawk Park opened its 10-race card on Tuesday (June 20).
Pacing fillies hit the track in the first with 1-2 favourite Pass Line powering to a 1:54.1 victory. The Dave Menary-trained daughter of All Bets Off sat second while Tribal Dancer cut the mile through fractions of :29, :59.3 and 1:28.1 before the final quarter sprint. Tribal Dancer stayed resolute to the inside while Pass Line popped pocket and bore inside slightly through her bid. But once she hit top gear, Pass Line zipped forward to cap a :25.3 final quarter and win by 1-1/2 lengths. Kittys Column finished another five lengths behind in third and Singingintherain was fourth.
Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC own Pass Line, a homebred for the team. Louis-Philippe Roy drove the $3.10 winner.
Trotting colts and geldings competed to cap the early daily double and Desiree Jones trainee Top Mast decimated his peers with a 1:57.1 mile. Driver James MacDonald floated the colt by Walner towards the lead past a :30 first quarter and took control from Lonely Lakewood to a 1:00 half. Lonely Lakewood then broke stride spinning off three-quarters in 1:29.4, leaving Top Mast on a wide lead. The odds-on favourite strode home with a :27.2 final quarter to win by 7-1/4 lengths over Mrstery Deal in second and Maestro Seelster in third.
Gino Toscani owns Top Mast, a $25,000 Lexington Selected Sale purchase. He paid $3.50 to win.
