'Daddy' Prevails At Inverness Opener

Odds-on favourite Intended Royalty put up quite the fight through the final three-eighths of Sunday's (June 20) $1,250 winners-over pacing feature at Inverness Raceway, but there was no topping Daddy Let Me Drive on the Father's Day program.

Rodney Gillis used pole position to its fullest, gunning the seven-year-old I Can Only Imagine gelding to the lead and seating Intended Royalty (Redmond Doucet) in the pocket through a :29.1 first quarter before backing the half down to 1:00. The pace picked up nearing the final turn, as Intended Royalty angled wide just before three-quarters in 1:29.3 — and the battle was on. Despite Intended Royalty's best efforts, Daddy Let Me Drive hung tough, eking out a 1:57.4 victory by a scant nose. Eastcoast Invader (Gerard Kennedy) finished third, 4-1/4 lengths behind.

Donald Beaton owns and trains Daddy Let Me Drive, whose debut victory in 2021 was the 20th win of his career.
