Mildred Williams Series At Big M

Published: June 2, 2009 09:50 am EDT

Harness racing’s top female drivers will compete in a race to benefit the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Go Red for Women program on Saturday, June 13 at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Members of the Mildred Williams International Driving Series will donate their earnings from the race to the AHA movement that helps fund cutting-edge research, lifesaving educational programs and advocates for protection of women’s health from heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of American women.

Guests can join in the fundraising efforts by donation through AHA’s on-site volunteers or by ordering from a special prix fixe menu in Terraces Restaurant. Terraces will offer a three-course menu and two wine pairings for $42 per person (excludes tax, gratuity, admission and program), with $5 from each meal sold donated directly to the AHA. The menu features both traditional selections and heart healthy alternatives. For reservations, call 201-THE-BIGM.

An exciting program of live harness racing begins at 7:00 p.m. The top New Jersey-breds will compete for $1.1 million in stakes purses in the $500,000 Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Classic, $200,000 Thomas D'Altrui Miss New Jersey and $200,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Championships for three-year-old trotting colts and fillies.

Now in its fourth year, the Mildred Williams Driving Series creates racing opportunities for female drivers in harness racing while raising money for charity. Named for the late Mildred Williams, one of the sport’s first successful female drivers, it has expanded to include 35 venues across North America that host races for the series.
