Can The ‘Big Dog’ Beat The Heat?

DM Big Dog Daddy, a four-year-old son of Art Major, will look to find his winning stride come Saturday evening at Mohawk Racetrack in the $20,000 first leg of the Beat The Heat Pacing Series.

The winner of $41,530 has been ultra-consistent since entering trainer Bob Young’s barn. The bay gelding has yet to miss a cheque in six starts for the resident of Guelph, Ont., which includes a pair of victories and lifetime-best performance of 1:53.3 taken at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.

“He has been very good for us,” Young said. “He’s a very versatile horse which always helps. He seems to be getting better and better every start and I think that will continue on Saturday.”

Owned by Michael J. Watson & Sons Inc., the four-time winner was been previously conditioned by Darrin Watson, but this isn’t the first time DM Big Dog Daddy has entered Young’s stable.

“I had him for a few starts last year and he did alright for us,” Young said. “Darrin then took him home and sent him back up to us this year. He was a big horse last year as a three-year-old so we haven’t noticed much difference in him. He’s maturing into a nice racehorse.”

Young, who has trained winners over $11 million, remains optimistic about the gelding’s progress.

“He’s such a sound horse which can only help his career,” he stated. “He’s the type of horse who I think will climb up and down the ladder on the WEG circuit for many years. He can only get better with age and as the season goes on.”

Billy Davis Jr. will look to guide DM Dig Dog Daddy to victory for the fifth time in his career when they line up behind the gate in the fifth race on Saturday evening.

“There’s a good group of horses in that series, but I think we’ll be competitive,” he said. “We had a good draw [Post 2], which never hurts and he’s got enough talent and speed to belong there. We’ll see what’s in store.”

The second leg of the Beat The Heat Pacing Series will be contested for a purse of $30,000 on June 30 with the $50,000 final slated for July 7.
