Trainer Guy Gagnon landed a hat trick which included a victory in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday night (June 18).
Gagnon’s pupil Flash Cube, whom he also drove, motored to the top in a :27.1 first quarter and held strongly to the point. Mayhem Like Me, the 9-5 favourite, mounted a first-over challenge through middle splits of :56.3 and 1:23.3, but Flash Cube continued on the lead through the lane to post a length victory in 1:52.1. Vanilla Malted closed to grab second from Mayhem Like Me with National Debt taking fourth.
Yvan Mondoux owns Flash Cube, a five-year-old gelding by Sportswriter. He won for the 13th time from 77 starts and has now banked $172,978. He returned $6.70 to win.
Gagnon’s other victories nearly bookended the Sunday card. He won in the nightcap with Western Phil (1:54.1 winning mile; $11.10), but won in the second race on the card with Show Me The Magic (1:56; $7.60).
