Ellagator became the fastest pacing mare over age five on a half-mile track in the history of harness racing when she won the $18,000 Fillies and Mares Open in 1:49.3 at MGM Northfield Park on Saturday (June 18).
Ellagator (Western Vintage - Dame Truth) started from post six. She left from the gate and led at every call through blistering fractions of :25.4, :53.3 and 1:20.3 to stop the clock in 1:49.3, easily beating her competition by 8-1/2 lengths.
The previous record was 1:50, held by Godiva Seelster in 2018 at Northfield.
Northfield Park’s leading trainer Cory Kreiser conditions the pacer for owner Thunder Racing Stables of Brecksville, Ohio. Billy Davis Jr. was in the sulky for the winning drive.
Ellagator now has four wins in 14 starts this year. Saturday’s victory was her 12th score and bolstered her lifetime bankroll to $299,612. She was heavily favoured and returned $3.20 to win.
