Sophomores Star In Maritime Finals

The Maritime Breeders finals for three-year-old fillies and colts are now in the history books. The rich finals were held Saturday, June 18 at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Glory Jean, owned by Blair Hansen of Charlottetown and trained by Tom Weatherbie, won the Ken Starratt Memorial for three-year-old fillies in line to Mark Bradley in 1:57.2. Bradley put the daughter of Brandons Cowboy on the point and rolled through fractions of :28.1, :58.2 and 1:27.4 to claim the $25,420 final. Maudail Mac (Ken MacDonald) was second with Southfield Sassy (Terry Gallant) third. Race favourite Howmacscanasta made a break and finished eighth.

Heart And Soul, with trainer/driver Clare MacDonald in the bike, captured the Doug Harkness Memorial, the $21,430 colt final, in 1:55.1. The son of Western Paradise, owned by Earith and George Riley of Kensington, P.E.I., held off Jackson K Down (Gilles Barrieau) for the victory with Lukes Cowboy (Kenny Arsenault) closing for third.

In other action, trainer Jackie Matheson enjoyed at big night at the office sending four horses to winner’s circle, including top class performer D Gs Camme (Barrieau) in 1:55 flat. The two-time winner of the Governor’s Plate, owned by Quentin and Hal Bevan, Tom Clark and Ron Matheson of Charlottetown, turned away Forever Paradise (Mike McGuigan) for the score. Narragansett (Jason Hughes) was third. The other Matheson stable winners were Perfect Escape, Mozartsplace and Santiago Style.

Gilles Barrieau had a driving triple.

The wager was $41,959.
