'Rocco' Wins Summerside's Top Class

Roccos Cavallo beat Sparky Bayama in a deep stretch duel to the finish to win the Sunday afternoon feature in 1:58.3 at Red Shores Summerside.

Mark Bradley mapped out the winning trip when he placed the Tyler Desroches trainee into third through the opening panel of :28.4 before making his move to track down fraction-setter Bet The House through splits of 1:00.1 and 1:29.2. A seven-year-old gelding co-owned by Justin Desroches of Summerside, Roccos Cavallo paid $14.50 to win. Sparky Bayama (Gary Chappell) was second while Van Zant (Ron Matheson) finished third.

Abundaspin, with trainer Harold Shepherd at the controls, won the Open Trot in 2:01.1 over Zip The Lip (Brian MacPhee) and Caliban Hanover (Ron Gass). The 13-year-old gelding owned by Mikaela Lustic of Cornwall, posted his second win in a row since moving to P.E.I.

The fastest mile of the day went to Colossal Killean, who tripped the timer in 1:57.1 for driver Mike McGuigan, trainer Mitch Tierney and owner Jonah Moase of Cornwall.

Driver Mike Stevenson opened the beautiful afternoon of racing with back-to-back winning performances aboard N Xample Deal for trainer Pat Murphy and Modern Girl for Elton Millar of Tyne Valley.

Racing returns to Summerside next Sunday. Post time is 1 p.m.
