There was a 'brew ha ha' Sunday at Red Shores Summerside between Si Semalu and Big Surf in the afternoon's featured $2,200 Preferred Pace.
Si Semalu, a newcomer to Prince Edward Island from the Ontario racing circuit purchased by Foxyhall racing stable of Summerside, was making his first lifetime start on red soil and he meant business. Driver Jason Hughes hustled the son of Modern Art from the gate and hooked up with Big Surf (Marc Campbell) en route to the opening quarter in a swift :27.4.
The two horses battled neck and neck, toe to toe through a half reached in :55.3 before Big Surf threw in the towel when they reached the three-quarter pole in 1:25.3.
The trip set up perfectly for All Turain and Corey MacPherson, who charged three-high at the third panel to cruise by his tiring stablemate and march to a two-length victory in 1:56.4. Si Semalu, who battled a strong wind throughout the mile, held on for a much deserved second while Outside The Wire (Kenny Arsenault) rallied for third.
All Turain notched his first victory of the season following a 2014 campaign in which he won 12 of 20 starts. He is trained by Trevor Hicken and owned by Lee Hicken of Charlottetown, P.E.I. The score gave MacPherson a driving triple on the day.
Hog Aufray, Ultimate Faith, Carrera Angel and Casimir Luciano provided Campbell with four wins on the card. Ultimate Faith's 2:00.2 nose decision over favourite Blue Star Outlaw in the fifth race gave 17-year-old Ryan Desroche the first training win of his career.
Walter Cheverie and Brian MacPhee had driving doubles.
