Grey Sea headed pacesetter Byby Baby Byby on the wire for a rebound victory in the $16,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Century Downs on Friday, June 12.
John Abbott drove the 1:55 winner trained by his father, Gord, making a well-timed move from the pocket once first-over challenger Always Gonna B You (Drew Campbell) backed away turning for home. Grey Sea, the 3-1 second choice, surged in the stretch and just caught Byby Baby Byby (Mike Hennessy), who had led through fractions of :27.3, :55.4 and 1:25.1. Poker Queen (Phil Giesbrecht), last week's Open winner and this week's 8-5 favourite, rallied wide from behind the stalling cover to finish third.
Grey Sea has won two of her last three Preferred starts, with her bounce-back victory on Friday yielding a $8.20 return for her backers at the betting windows.
The grey homebred, a seven-year-old daughter of Custard The Dragon out of Preference, has amassed $287,890 in career earnings with 31 wins and 41 other top three finishes from 91 starts for Seaspray Stables Ltd. of Nanaimo, B.C.
