Speed Away avenged his narrow last-start loss with a grinding 1:55.2 victory in the $31,250 Open Handicap Trot on Wednesday, June 10 at Harrington Raceway.
Dyladmar (Russell Foster), sent off at 2-1, marched to the lead from post four and set fractions of :28.3, :58 and 1:26.4 before Speed Away (Corey Callahan) challenged gamely first-over on the final turn. Speed Away chipped away at Dyladmar and edged clear by a half-length in the stretch for his fourth win of the year in 14 starts for trainer Nick Callahan. A Blue Million (Tony Morgan) finished third.
The winning eight-year-old Father Patrick-All The Time gelding recorded his third Open win of the meet. Speed Away, owned by Breakaway Racing and Yorwollahan Racing Team, has amassed 28 wins and $640,923 in lifetime earnings in 113 starts. The former track horse of the meet has displayed an affinity for Delaware’s half-mile racetrack, where he’s won 16 races in his career. He paid $4.20 to win.
The victory was part of a triple for driver Callahan, who steered two winners for his father on the 14-race card.
On the undercard, Vince Bradley and Keesha Givens’ Legacys Jailbreak ($6.40, Brandon Givens) won her second straight race for her new barn in a $20,139 conditioned trot in 1:55.2. Givens joined Troy Beyer with a driving triple.
