MD Begins Buying Slots

After years of talk and tangled battling, Maryland has taken its first steps at actually getting slots betting underway, and even that was controversial.

The state Board of Public Works approved, by a 2-1 vote, a $49 million contract with six different vendors for lease or purchase of 1,062 slot machines.

The units are intended for the Penn National operation in Perryville in Cecil County in western Maryland, and the state bought them to provide greater oversight, a decision made three years ago.
