When it comes to top trotters, there hasn’t been a better one than San Pail in recent weeks on the WEG circuit

.

On Monday evening the five-year-old son of San Pellegrino – Village Beauty toted a two-race win streak into Mohawk Racetrack’s $50,000 Open Trot, and he had no problem extending the win streak to three-in-a-row for owner/trainer Rod Hughes of Dunsford and owner/breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON.

Randy Waples worked San Pail into the three-hole as the field left the starting gate, but he quickly became the pocket sitter as a result of a first-turn miscue by Sakic Seelster. Define The World and Paul MacDonell strolled the field through panels of :27.3, :57 and 1:27, but they couldn’t seal the deal.

San Pail tipped off the pylons at the head of the lane and powered home in :27.4 to win by more than two lengths over Photo Maxx, who closed well to finish second. Define The World faded to finish third in the six-horse affair.

The winning effort helped San Pail push his 2009 record to 6-2-1 in 13 tries, and the lion’s share of the purse bumped the 16-time winner’s yearly bankroll to $196,000. He has banked more than $520,000 to date.
