Update On Friday Accident At Scioto

A multiple horse accident occurred in the 15th race at Scioto Downs on Friday, May 8, resulting in injuries to a number of drivers.

Braeview Bondi A (Luke Hanners) fell while racing on the lead down the backstretch, causing a pile up of trailing horses including Rose Run Yannick (David Miller), Mcfehr (Tyler Smith), Freaky Feet Beast (Aaron Merriman), Midnight Day (Trevor Smith) and Vintage Ace (Kayne Kauffman).

The 15th race was immediately declared a No Contest and the 16th and final race of the night was cancelled.

According to a statement from the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association (OHHA) on Saturday (May 9), Kayne Kauffman suffered a fractured heel. Aaron Merriman suffered five broken ribs, a shattered scapula, and a partially collapsed lung. He is being kept in the hospital for further observation. David Miller suffered a compound fracture of the ankle and is having surgery. Tyler Smith and Trevor Smith were evaluated at the hospital and released without any major injuries. All the horses involved in the accident are reported to be okay.
