If ever there was a horse who loved
The photogenic pacer has now found his way to victory lane in his last seven starts over the half-mile oval thanks to Monday’s triumph in the $13,000 Preferred Handicap for horse and gelding pacers.
Sea Laird, who was sent off as the 2-5 favourite, wound up being parked out every step of the mile before digging down deep and posting a 1:55.4 win for driver Tyler Borth and trainer Terry Gallant.
Bugsy Maguire marched to the lead and laid down fractions of :27.3, :57.1 and 1:26.2, but he couldn’t go the distance. It was Sea Laird, who despite spending the entire mile on the rim, who kicked home in :29.2 to win by three-quarters of a length over Ideal Perception in 1:55.4.
The seven-year-old son of Custard The Dragon-Devil Likes It Hot improved his 2023 record to 5-0-1 from 12 starts with the victory. The 27-time winner bumped his overall bankroll to $225,495 for owner Stacey Smith Robinson of South Mountain, Ont.
