Although an official date has not been set, Indiana Horse Racing Commission Executive Director Mike Smith recently announced plans to retire.
Smith will assist commission members with their search for his replacement and ensure that a smooth transition occurs once a replacement is named.
Since joining the ranks of the commission as its executive director in 2016, Smith has continued the Commission’s goal to maintain the highest integrity for Indiana’s racing along with fostering and promoting an environment that encourages investment and growth of Indiana’s horse racing program.
“Deciding to retire has not been an easy decision to make, especially when working in an industry which I have grown so passionate about,” said Smith. “However, I’m looking forward to spending time with family and focusing on my existing business ventures.”
“I believe I can speak for the entire industry in saying Mike’s departure will certainly leave big shoes to fill,” said commission chairman Dr. Phil Borst. “His leadership skills have fostered an environment of open communication and consideration for the benefit of all sectors within our industry.”
