Continuing his winning ways off back-to-back claims, trotter Warrawee Proton added to current owner Maple Leaf Racing's leading win total at the Mohawk meet on Friday night (May 6).
In the evening's $12,000 to $15,000 claiming handicap trot, Warrawee Proton was caught wide moving from an early six-hole at the half before picking up cover from Guiltywithanexcuse -- that one back out after leaving from the outside post and being overtaken by Moonbeam Hall and then Utopia. Warrawee Proton trotted away late to defeat Utopia by five lengths in a career-best clocking of 1:54.3 while Guiltywithanexcuse finished third.
Warrawee Proton paid $5.10 to win as the 3-2 favourite. The Muscle Mass-Yankee Sally gelding is riding a three-race win streak that includes victories for three different trainers, although he has retained the services of driver Sylvain Filion throughout. The five-year-old gelding was claimed last time he raced on April 14 at Mohawk for $15,000 and is now trained by Sean Mehlenbacher.
Warrawee Proton has been claimed five times this year for an average price of $13,400. He has won half of his 12 seasonal starts while earning $30,832.
Warrawee Proton's latest connections from Maple Leaf Racing, consisting of Onkar Dhillon, Timothy Kin, Chad Mehlenbacher and Saleem Rana, lead all owners at the Mohawk meet with five wins and purse earnings of $64,250 from nine starts. Other Mohawk winners for the Mississauga, Ont. group include Idol Duharas, entered in Saturday's star-studded Preferred, and WEG series star Shades Of Bay.
