War Filly went to the front and didn’t look back en route to posting an 11-1 upset in Saturday’s $11,600 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Handicap at Flamboro Downs.
Brett MacDonald put the pedal to the metal with War Filly, and together they led the field through first-half fractions of :27.4 and :57.2. Race favourite Buttermilk Hanover came first-over on the way to the half, and she showed a narrow lead while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:25.4. War Filly wasn’t finished, however, and her :29.1 closing speed earned her the win by a head over Buttermilk Hanover in 1:55.1. Cenalta Call Girl was third.
Trainer Jack Powell co-owns the seven-year-old daughter of Mach Three-Elite Avatar with Brad Powell of Simcoe, Ont. The mare, who is 4-for-17 this season, is a 21-time winner who has banked more than $190,000 in her career.
