Onthemoneyside went wire-to-wire in the $27,100 final of the Out Like A Lion Series for trainer Luc Blais on Friday night at Rideau Carleton Raceway, pulling off a mild upset over Rene Allard trainees Future Talent and Rae Conns Dyl Emma
. The series is for non-winners of $30,000 (fillies & mares $37,500) lifetime as of Dec. 31, 2011.
Onthemoneyside left from post five and split horses to make the lead with Yves Filion at the controls. The 9-2 third choice then carved out fractions of :28.1, :58, and 1:28.1 en route to a four length victory in 1:58.4. Future Talent and Simon Allard finished second off a pocket trip while Rae Conns Dyl Emma and John MacDonald advanced first over to show. Onthemoneyside paid $11.20 to win.
The four-year-old On The Sonny Side mare was also a winner in last week's preliminary leg of the series following two fourth place finishes. The 2010 Majestic Son Trotting Series runner-up now sports a lifetime record reading 4-6-1 in 15 starts with $40,920 earned in purses. Blais co-owns the mare with breeder Judith Farrow of Hemmingford, Que.
Blais, Farrow and Filion teamed up for a trotting double on the 13-race card with three-year-old Justice Hall gelding Intimidate.
