The Somebeachsomewhere, formerly known as the Burlington Stakes, is the WEG circuit’s final stakes stepping stone for the industry’s ‘glamour boys’ before the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup. NA Cup action is scheduled to get underway with eliminations on June 10. The prestigious final will be raced on June 17.
A pair of $70,000 Somebeachsomewhere divisions has been carded. The divisions, which will feature 11-horse fields, have been carded as Race 4 and Race 8
The first division (Race 4 – estimated post time 8:30 p.m.) will feature a pair of highly-ranked colts on the NA Cup trail in Sports Column and Beyond Delight.
Sportswriter bay Sports Column (PP1 – Chris Christoforou) will be making the third start of his 2017 campaign on Saturday. The student of trainer/co-owner Blake MacIntosh won the Battle of Waterloo last season to go along with multiple Ontario Sires Stakes Gold events. The career winner of four of eight races and $229,180 in purses will be looking to record his first victory of the season when he faces the gate Saturday. MacIntosh (of Cambridge, Ont.) co-owns Sports Column along with Hutt Racing Stable (Paoli, PA) and Daniel Plouffe (Bromont, QC). Sports Column was pegged as the 10-1 third choice in Trot Magazine’s 2017 Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book.
Canada’s Two-Year-old Pacing Colt of the Year in 2016, Beyond Delight (PP7, Sylvain Filion), will be looking to put his best foot forward for trainer Tony O’Sullivan on Saturday. The Bettors Delight bay won three of his 11 races at two and banked over $424,000 during the campaign. He will be making his second pari-mutuel start of the season on Saturday. Beyond Delight is owned by Jeffrey Snyder (New York, NY), Michael Snyder (New York, NY) and the Four Friends Racing Stbl LLC (Moorestown, NJ). Beyond Delight was gauged as the 12-1 fourth choice in Trot’s NA Cup Spring Book.
The second division (Race 8 – 9:50 p.m.) will feature Streakvana, Henry The Dragon and Ideal Wheel, all of which were Top-10 selections in Trot’s Spring Book.
The Scott McEneny-trained Streakvana (PP3, Sylvain Filion), a son of Big Jim, will be in search of his first victory of the season when he lines up for his Somebeachsomewhere split. The gelding was solid at two, as he won four of his seven starts and was a multiple OSS Gold winner for owners Brad Grant and Teresa Davidson of Milton, Ont. Streakvana will be making his fourth pari-mutuel start of the season on Saturday in the Somebeachsomewhere. Streakvana was assessed as the 16-1 sixth choice in Trot’s Spring Book.
The Clyde Francis-trained Custard The Dragon colt Henry The Dragon (PP10, Montrell Teague) will have to overcome the disadvantaged outer post in the second division if he wants to get the job done for owner George Teague Jr. (Harrington, DE). Henry The Dragon was a bit of a beast in the Delaware program last season at two, as he won five of his six races and banked a total of $115,000 in purses. He heads into the Somebeachsomewhere off of a fourth-place finish in the Art Rooney at Yonkers Raceway. Henry The Dragon was pegged as the 18-1 seventh pick in Trot’s NA Cup Spring Book.
The Casie Coleman-trained American Ideal colt Ideal Wheel (PP2, Louis Philippe Roy) will make his second pari-mutuel start of the season in the Somebeachsomewhere on Saturday. Owned by Mac Nichol (Burlington, Ont.), Ideal Wheel won three of his six races last year at two and missed the board just once. Trot’s NA Cup Spring Book selected Ideal Wheel as its 20-1 co-eighth choice this year.
