Daylon Magician became the fastest two-year-old trotting colt in the history of the OSS program last season when he captured the OSS Super Final
at Woodbine Racetrack, and on Monday night he matched the all-time OSS record for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings when he captured the $130,000 OSS Gold Series final at Mohawk Racetrack.
The homebred son of Kadabra-Daylon Marvel, who captured his elimination one week ago in 1:54.4, made his way back to Campbellville and made a round trip to victory lane for driver Jack Moiseyev.
Daylon Magician floated off the gate from post six and ducked into the five-hole while Mr Joe Sixpack, a 1:54.1 winner in last week’s elimination round, charged to the top and threw down an opening quarter in :28.2. Mr Joe Sixpack was still in command at the mid-way point in :57.3, but the backfield was starting to come to life.
Moiseyev was the first to pull with Daylon Magician on the way to the half, but it didn’t take long for Lakefield to move off the pylons from his perch in the three-hole. Mr Joe Sixpack was still in command at the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1, with Lakefield first over and Daylon Magician poised to make a three-wide bid from fourth on the outside. Moiseyev kicked off the Lakefield’s cover and summoned up :26.3 closing speed from Daylon Magician en route to posting the 1-3/4 lengths tally over Sim Brown. Mr Joe Sixpack was third.
The 1:53.2 clocking matched Arch Madness’ OSS record for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings. He established the speed standard on November 10, 2007 in that year’s OSS Super Final.
Bred, owned and trained by David Lemon of Komoka, ON, Daylon Magician is now 2-for-2 this season after going 3-for-8 in his freshman campaign. The colt, who stashed away $225,300 last season, sits with an overall bankroll of $310,300.
The next round of OSS Gold Series eliminations are scheduled for July 2 at Georgian Downs, with the final scheduled for July 9.
