Sudbury Downs confirmed on Friday that harness racing will return to Northern Ontario in 2013.

The continuation of live racing at Sudbury Downs has been in question since March 2012 when the provincial government announced an end to the Slots At Racetracks Program.

Over the past year Sudbury Downs has worked with various provincial government agencies to come to an agreement that would allow harness racing to return to Northern Ontario for 2013. Negotiations have progressed to the stage were racetrack management has now confirmed that live harness racing will take place at Sudbury Downs every Sunday afternoon beginning on June 2, 2013 through to and including October 13, 2013. The Sunday afternoon race program will have a 1:30 p.m. post time.

“This last year has been very difficult for everyone involved in Ontario horse racing,” said Patrick MacIsaac, President of Sudbury Downs. “We are happy to be able to bring live harness racing back to the Greater Sudbury community for a 39th season.”

Why would Sudbury run on Sunday afternoon when there is at least 25 tracks running?!?!?Why wouldn't Sudbury run on a Sunday night where there is like 5 tracks running?

Why wouldn't Sudbury fill the "void" created by Flamboro on Sundays nights?

Note this appears to be only a ONE year deal to continue racing at Sudbury Downs.
I guess the OLG (and Liberals) had no choice. It just wouldn't look good to have the Slots operating with no horse racing.

This is very good news indeed. Racing should be part of every slot parlour which has a race track. Mr. Del Mastro is correct in this assertion. Just thinking out loud. Bruce T. Winning.......
