Like A Glove and trainer/driver Marc Whebby led at every call in the featured Winners Over Pace at Truro Raceway on Friday, May 29.
Sent postward as the 3-2 favourite from the inside post in the $2,500 feature, Like A Glove took up the leading role with the rest of the field lining up behind him in post position order through a :28.4 opening panel over the "good" track.
Bronx Drifter (Clare MacDonald) moved underway from the backfield as they headed to the half, which was clocked in :59.1 while Like A Glove remained unchallenged on top. Bronx Drifter continued his first-over grind moving alongside pocket-pursuer Bettor On Than Off (Ernie Laffin) as Like A Glove began to get away on them past three-quarters in 1:28.1.
Like A Glove turned for home with a four-length lead and cruised to a clear victory in 1:58 flat while Income Approach (Keith Legge) rallied wide from the back of the six-pack off the final turn to take second 1-3/4 lengths behind the bettors' choice. Bettor On Than Off, last week's top class winner, fought off Bronx Drifter in their own duel for the show spot.
Like A Glove was successful in his second start of the year for owner Wayne Whebby of Dartmouth, N.S. An Ontario stakes winner in his sophomore season, the five-year-old son of McWicked-Twin B Virtue now has more than $80,000 in purse earnings and 14 career victories, including 10 at Truro Raceway.
The winning Whebby connections doubled up on Friday evening's eight-race card, also scoring earlier with the front-striding Callsign Rooster, now two-for-two to start his three-year-old campaign. The Cattlewash-Turning The Table colt, who faced undefeated Horse of the Year Beau Jangles in his rookie season, turned in the fastest mile of the night, taking a $2,000 conditioned optional claiming pace in 1:57 by 2-1/2 lengths over older foes.
