After a nice soaking rain during the morning hours, the sun and wind came out to provide a 'fast' track for special Memorial Day action at Scioto Downs on Monday. Four sire stakes dashes were the highlight of the 11-race card.
Driver Chris Page had four wins on the afternoon, including the first sire stakes race to go off for three-year-old trotting colts. Trainer Eric Nesselroad had Neely Spring ready, and the gelding went on to notch his first win of the season in 2:00.4. The second division went to Final Breath and trainer/driver Hugh 'Sandy' Beatty in 1:57.1. Both horses are currently owned by their breeders, Fred Polk and Duane Lowe, respectively.
Jack Dailey and Hanky L surprised the betting public when they won the first sire stakes for three-year-old pacing colts at odds of 42-1. The duo won by one and a half lengths in 1:53 for trainer Herb LeVan. Retrieve Forever and Brett Miller took the final sire stakes race for trainer Brian Brown in 1:54.1. The winner's circle was packed full with members and friends of the owners, Country Club Acres Inc, Daniel Wozniak and Kalinoski Stable.
Both the Pick-4 and the Super High Five will carryover to Wednesday, when racing picks up again at Scioto with a 6:30 p.m. first-race post time.
