Trotting gelding Star Ruffnready doubled up in Rideau Carleton Raceway’s $13,000 Preferred class thanks to an off-the-pace performance in the Friday feature
.
With Rheo Filion at the lines, the James Lamacchia-trained Star Ruffnready worked his way into the three-hole when the gate sped away. He tracked SOS Breezer through panels of :28.3 and :58.1 before launching a first-over attack on that foe. SOS Breezer was still in command of the tempo at the three-quarter pole in 1:28, with Star Ruffnready inching closer on the outside. Just a half-length separated the two of them at the top of the stretch, but Star Ruffnready eventually collared the tempo setter and drew clear to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:58.2. Summerhill Charles was next best, and Silverado Dream rounded out the top three finishers.
Star Ruffnready, a six-year-old son of Armbro Winner-Star Wild Orchid, races for owners Lewis Murphy of St-Etienne-De-Beauharnois and Pepiniere Nicky Inc of Lery, QC. The victory was his third of the season in seven tries, and the 11-time winner boosted his overall earnings to $307,976 with the tally.
