Stevie Hanover drew away off a strong first-over march to win the $31,250 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace on Tuesday, May 26 at Harrington Raceway.
The four-year-old daughter of Betting Line-Shes A Fan was fourth through the :27.1 opening quarter, then pressured leader Bequeath (Art Stafford Jr.) to the half in :56.2 and took over at three-quarters in 1:24.1. Once on top for Montrell Teague, she kicked away to a 2-1/4-length triumph in 1:52.4 over Lil Miss Wondrphyl (Brandon Givens). Gogettermisscheddr (Tony Morgan) finished third.
Stevie Hanover, trained by Jamie Sullivan for Frank Chick, took her third win of the season in 13 starts. The mare is now 12-for-37 lifetime. She paid $6 to win.
Trainer Joe Columbo tripled for the second straight Harrington card, again sending out three winners in combination with George & Tina Dennis Racing. They won with Hungry For Money ($14), Seriously Fearless ($26), part-owned by Curtis Larrimore, and Im Won Last Wiser ($8.80), in conjunction with co-owner The Wiz Kids Stable LLC. All three were driven by Mike Cole. Columbo further extended his lead in the trainers' standings as he upped his seasonal Harrington tally to 25. He is 11 wins ahead of second-placed Chuck Crissman Jr.
Ron Short’s Mackenzie Mac (Shane Griffith) upset at 79-1 in the second race from post eight, hitting the wire first in 1:57.4 off a pocket trip for her second career win in 40 starts. She paid $161.20 to win.
Jason Thompson tripled on the 14-race card.
