Another Great Mass captured the fastest $25,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Grassroots division of the first leg for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings with a career-best effort on Monday, May 25 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The gelding slid in behind Toss Of The Dice (Mark MacDonald) into the first turn, following that cover two-wide as four horses marched out to contest the pace. Toss Of The Dice took over past the quarter in :27.2, then released the three-wide Tavern Onthe Green (Louis-Philippe Roy) before Another Great Mass continued uncovered to the front approaching the half in :56.3. Trevor Henry provided the gelding a soft third panel to three-quarters in 1:26, and Another Great Mass had enough to brush off the pocket-popping Tavern Onthe Green coming into the lane and resist a pylon-skimming Fourth Gear (James MacDonald) for the neck victory in 1:54.2. Green Nineteen (Tyler Borth) closed for third.
Another Great Mass, who took his first win of the year after breaking stride in his 2026 debut, comes off a successful two-year-old season at the OSS Gold level. The Ed Peconi-trained son of Muscle Mass-Incredibility won the second Gold leg and finished second in the Super Final to O’Brien Award winner Strobe Lite. He has now earned $232,666 and won four of 12 career starts for owner-breeder Wade Peconi of Stanchel, P.E.I. His backers received $6.10.
Anibal Duharas ($3.60) won the second Grassroots division with a 1:55 mile and a 2-1/2-length margin. Louis-Philippe Roy drove the Green Manalishi S-Cleopatre Duharas colt to his first win of the year in two starts for trainer Duane Marfisi and owner Westover De L’Estrie Inc. of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.
First Class Mass ($2.60) carved out the fractions and was steadfast down the lane to win the last split by three-quarters of a length in 1:54.3 for driver James MacDonald. The three-year-old son of Muscle Mass-July recorded his second win of the year in five starts. Dave Menary trains the gelding for Clinton Guitard of Waterdown, Ont. and Haryott Stables Inc. of Etobicoke, Ont.
