Pepsi North America Cup eligible Some Major Beach, a half brother to the great Somebeachsomewhere, made his 2014 qualifying debut Monday morning at Mohawk Racetrack with a new trainer of record.

Some Major Beach kicked off Mohawk’s seven-dash qualifying session with Chris Christoforou in the bike and Mark Steacy listed as the colt’s new conditioner.

Listed at odds of 55-1 in Trot Magazine’s 2014 NA Cup Spring Book, Some Major Beach lined up in Post 4 in Race 1 Monday morning and was parked in third to the opening quarter in :30.

Christoforou and his charge cleared to the lead in the second quarter and cut the middle fractions in :59.1 and 1:27.2. The duo had a five-length lead at the head of the lane and completed the mile with a :27.1 final quarter. Some Major Beach’s win time was 1:54.3 and his margin of victory was eight and a half lengths.

There was just one other Cup eligible on track during the qualifying session. Jiggle It (120-1 in Trot’s Spring Book) finished second in Race 6 for driver Randy Waples and trainer Mark Steacy. The Badlands Hanover colt was individually timed in 1:55.1 and finished second to Always A Virgin filly Nat A Virgin, who won by four lengths in 1:54.2 for trainer/driver Dustin Jones.
